The 1996 sci-fi blockbuster Independence Day is one of those movies that redefined a genre of stunning summer disaster film.
However Giovani dos Santos Mundial Camiseta , after 20 years of waiting, the shockingly thin and inept sequel Independence Day: Resurgence hardly lives up to the standard set up by the original. This one is just a popcorn movie, with no new ideas.
The first half of Resurgence is gloomy. Much time is given to the introductions of old and new faces, with hardly any action.
The story is set as the White House prepares for a celebration for the 20th anniversary of the 1996 alien war. Humans have adopted the advanced alien technology and have lived in peace since then.
We see a cheesy painting of Captain Hiller hanging in the White House and know that ironically he perished in a training exercise, despite the fact that he had piloted a flight and saved the world 20 years ago.
His son Dylan (Jessie Usher) carries on his legacy as a hot-shot pilot in this film and forges a friendship with Jake Morrison (Liam Hemsworth), an orphan and impetuous flyboy who is eager to prove himself.
Jake has romance with Patricia Whitmore (Maika Monroe), who happens to be the daughter of the president from the first film, Thomas Whitmore (Bill Pullman).
Mostly remembered for his inspiring speech, Whitmore is now haunted by visions of the invasion and calls himself an old man.
Also returning from the 1996 adventure is David Levinson (Jeff Goldblum) and his funny Jewish father, Julius (Judd Hirsch), who has written a book about aliens in the interim.
Chinese actor Angelababy and Singaporean actor Chin Han also pop up, playing a pilot and an officer in the command center.
On the celebration day, an ocean-sized spacecraft attacks Earth. Why do they come after 20 years' silence? The film merely says that the ship answered the signal from the defeated ships on Earth and has come to dig the planet's core for energy. But shouldn't there be a more well-explained cause for invasion?
Though scripted by five authors, including one original writer, director and producer Roland Emmerich, the story line is forgettable and shallow.
The characters' bonding through so much hugging, cheering and weeping during the attacks just doesn't resonate.
Anyone can bump into his friends and relatives anywhere in this messy country. And just when we believe something important is happening, the film suddenly shifts scenes, stripping the suspense.
The second half features a lot of action through bombing scenes, but also imperative exclamations. Not much separates it from everyday green-screen blockbusters scenes.
Aliens like attacking landmarks. There is a dogfight with speedy aircraft while we run out of time. A heroic figure perishes. Small children and animals appear and are saved on the road that leads us directly to the real enemy.
Moreover, the big boss is completely out of place. The queen alien is way too silly in the showdown to be convincing that this race really has wiped out other species with superior technology and massive city-sized spacecraft on their way to Earth. It simply doesn't fit the style of these aliens.
What makes the film more of a yawner is its comic touches. There is no chemistry between the new crew and not enough interaction among the returning characters.
It just mixes together ridiculous action scenes and immature humor, making the whole film feel more unbelievable.
Undoubtedly, the film has strong special effects, with amazing Star Wars-style visuals.
In a scene when Dylan and Jake carry a nuclear bomb to the center of the mothership, they find that the aliens have their own eco-system there. In another scene we see fighters flying through the detritus of cars and buildings sucked up to the sky.
But the stunning effects do not save the poor, simple plot and development unworthy of its predecessor.

NAIROBI， March 22 (Xinhua) -- Kenya's dry maize prices have hit a record high of 44 U.S. dollars per 90kg bag as cross-border imports from Uganda and Tanzania nearly dry up.
The last time prices were at nearly such a level was over 10 years ago when East Africa's biggest economy suffered a dry spell， as it is happening now.
But besides the dry spell and low imports， the current price surge has been blamed on farmers and traders hoarding stocks they have in search of higher prices.
The cost of the produce， data from wholesale markets showed Wednesday， is the highest in lakeside city of Kisumu， where a 90kg bag is going for 44 dollars.
In the capital Nairobi， a 90kg bag of the produce is retailing at 40 dollars while in the coastal city of Mombasa 42 dollars.
Prices are lowest in the breadbasket districts of Nakuru and Eldoret where the grain is retailing at between 35 dollars and 38 dollars.
On the other hand， retailers are selling a 2kg tin of dry maize at between 1.1 dollars and 1.2 dollars in various parts of the country， an increase from less than a dollar at the beginning of the year.
The swelling cost of dry maize has consequently pushed up the price of maize flour， which has risen to a record 1.3 dollars for a 2kg packet， the highest level in the history of the product.
As the prices rise， cross-border imports which the east African nation heavily relies on to supplement its about 40 million bags production， have dwindled.
Data from East African Grain Council on Wednesday indicated that as low as 2 metric tonnes of the produced are imported into Kenya at various border-points that include Malaba， Lwakhakha and Busia， on the Ugandan side and Isebania and Namanga on the Tanzanian side.
Last year， the Ministry of Agriculture had projected that maize imports from Uganda and Tanzania will hit at least 20 million bags.
